Today is a High Holiday associated with the fashionable tradition of wearing a proper Easter bonnet... which for me is a little too staid and predictable. Still, I manage to find amusement (and considerably more irritation) in ladies and gents parading about in toppers that they clearly don't own.
What I mean to say is: if there's just one day of the year that you attempt to pull off a fashion statement, for the love of St. Isabella Blow and Philip Treacy, do not wear something that makes you feel self-conscious or anything short of fabulous. Traditional, demure, vintage, couture, or cleverly crafted at home - don't ever duck your head for the beauty perched upon it!
When turning heads, graciously acknowledge compliments, and answer inquiries with a sincere smile.
My WASPy Republican parents, who lead a tranquil(ized) life behind The Orange Curtain in Southern California belong to a church where the membership are extremely conservative: enjoying their Golden Years and their titanium hip replacements. Whenever I accompanied my family to a service, I was never sans chapeau or less than enthralled by the effusive and delighted descriptions of their own collections of the congregation.
The above is one of my most prized vintage finds, the patina and the hand-formed cream silk ranunculus are so elegant, brilliant and simple.
Have a truly beautiful day!
